Me, Myself and Inspiring Stories
Every student gets to hear inspiring stories of successful people. There aren’t one or two but so many successful people in this world and they all have their own stories. If you observe them closely, you’ll find a pattern they follow. Usually, the stories start from the successful man as a poor infant with only one of his parents alive. The story then moves to the child’s education where one of the two possible situations would come up. The child either pursues excellent education in dire economic conditions of his/her family (like studying under street lights!!), or the child is not interested in mechanical study and eventually becomes a school dropout. From there the story continues on the lines of how the student managed money for education; what he did for living; how he made right decisions; how he made use of opportunities and how, in the end, he became a successful person.
Ever since I was a kid, I used to listen to such stories and feel motivated. A story a day will make sure that I don’t keep my books away! I still go agape when I imagine the struggle in dreadful circumstances that these great men have gone through in their lives, to come out as a highly respected successful individual.
Let’s look at some examples. Ramanujan lacked the basics for living, Bill gates was a school dropout, Steve Jobs was a college dropout, Narayana Murthy was once struck by poverty, Dhirubai Ambani started reliance with Rs.15000, Lakshmi mittal was poor and a part of unmanageable huge family, Rajini kanth was a bus conductor, and our own ARR... needs no introduction.
All these stories were inspiring alright; but every person who becomes successful has this kind of story behind his/her achievement. And normally, we all are awestruck by it!!
This is where some serious questions run into my head. Do they all lead to a stereotype “successful people had to win some very hard battles in their lives”? All stories have the same base which is one or more than one of the list - poverty, lack of good education or education in bad monetary conditions,” striving to live” years, and other equally grave conditions. At a level, this really irks me. Such stories have literally stopped motivating me for the simple fact that I too am going through an important phase that’s going to decide my life and want to be successful! And if only hardships at younger age can bring light to the great future, then I don’t see any bright light glittering at even the farthest point I can see from here.
I never had formidable monetary problems. Education was bad but I am not a school dropout. I am not struggling for food or shelter and I have my own room with lot of space. I have taken numerous bad decisions in my life. I have carelessly overlooked many opportunities. And now I am sitting and writing this post wondering what the theory is behind big achievements because we have never heard (or at least I have never heard) of a successful man who was far from poverty with almost comfortable school life. Such people have always been a tiny dot and financially, either well-situated or troubled; more often the latter. How so ironical!
I do understand that success (in whatever form) cannot be achieved if we do not fight for it, and that you can never get to the top overnight on a smooth ride. But now I am saturated with identical “success stories” that I cannot endure another one of them starting from tortured childhood to terrific adulthood.
Miles to go!!
God Bless

Back to blog because of Rehman!!
I should say that I was too busy to blog all these days and even decided that I will not until something good happens to me. But now, even though no good has happened to me yet, I am feeling extremely happy that A.R.Rehman has created history…. and that has made me post in this almost deserted blog.
Slumdog Millionaire bagged 8 oscars for which makes me feel very good and the fact that ARR has bagged “2” makes me feel even better!! Apparently, a major population of India is happy and some, say like Amitabh Bachan, would keep it down at a level and say “yeah ok.. u got Oscar.. very good.. congratulations.. bye”.
Following the release of this film, we heard various comments about why one should not watch this movie. This is how I would like to respond to all those comments which started from Amitabh Bachan.
“The movie shows India in Bad Light. Movies that show India in bright lights deserve more recognition.”
Very correct. The movie definitely shows the dark sides of Mumbai. But what do you mean by movies that show India in bright light? Bollywood movies are competing with each other in “skin showing department”. All the directors and producers are busy finding girls would expose to the maximum for money. Tamil movie directors are interested only in commercial success (except for Mani Ratnam). Malyalam movies have no luck. Kannada movies have bad actors. Telugu movies… oh please. So people who make that comment, first tell me which film shows India in bright light and then speak about slumdog millionaire. I think that’s a comment that has no base.
“Why should we let a westerner make a movie in India that only shows India in bad light”
I read this comment in some news channel’s website; I don’t remember which one, though. But think about it, it’s not difficult to create a slum in London and finish the movie there (it would have only cost them a little more money). But beyond all that, there have been so many movies that has displayed India’s poverty, slums etc etc… but nobody questions those. We all sit and watch the film and say..”wah, it is an inspiring movie”.
It’s true that this film has won all its recognition only because a westerner has directed it. So what? If an Indian had directed this film, it would have been completely in Hindi and by releasing it abroad, he would have targeted only the Indians living over there. So obviously, it would not have got recognition. And if this movie had to go as an official entry for “foreign film” category in Oscars, our politicians would have made a mess out of it.
I am happy that now, because of danny boyle, an Indian film has won accolades and ARR’s talents have been recognized completely.
“By displaying the Indian slums (or western stereotypes about India) deliberately, Danny Boyle has attempted to make it appeal to the western audience and thus win awards”
So do you mean that we should not show on the screens, the western stereotypes about India? I don’t care whether Danny had a big plan or not. You like to watch all bollywood top stars and their hot air on screen rite? So the director gives you that. Probably that’s what even Danny did. If people in the west think India is all about poverty, then you make an impressive movie to disprove it. The movie shows only “whatever is there” in India. So if that bothers you so much, then stop carping and do something about the stereotype. Change the way India is. Make a difference (like what I am trying to!!).
There have been so many other comments as well and I think the negative reaction to this movie started only because Amitabh started it. He started it, his fans propagated it. Sometimes I am forced to think that the whole bollywood is “J” and that’s probably why there have been a lot of negative reactions.
Bollywood film makers, please stop begging girls to expose on screen and make sensible movies.
People, who don’t want to watch the film coz of the bloody blah blah, please get back to your senses and watch it like a movie.
ARR, you rock man!! You are THE GENIUS.

The Indian Premier League – Spellbinding
I watched the opening ceremony on 18th evening and was mesmerized with the way it was done. I couldn’t look anywhere apart from the TV for the first half an hour of the Ceremony. One of the best opening ceremonies I have ever seen. Its rocking to see the film stars owning and supporting their respective teams and see them screaming their head off for every six their team players produce.
It happened in the first match. The Kolkatta Knight Riders vs. Banglore Royal Challengers was an awesome highscoring game. Funnily, Vijaymalya spoke with Jadeja before the match began and was too proud of his team. I heard him say that his team is full of experience and probably the best in the eight. Sadly the team lost with a score that hardly reached 100 and Vijaymalya’s high paid cheer leaders had no dancing to do. Sharukh on the other hand was seen standing over the railings and dancing while his team almost broke the ball with hard-hit sixes.
This game, emphatically, is a million dollar fun, but I wouldn’t agree with the group that says this is best thing that can happen to the game of cricket. I don’t know if I am correct thinking this way but in my opinion, I would like to compare the situation with that of Football. There are leagues confined to the country clubs (men play for other country’s clubs too) and that way we see a lot of players endowed with ball-wielding skills on the field. And thus for them the World Cup becomes such an ambitious play. The feel the players and the viewers get for the FIFA World Cup is definitely unrivaled. However the in the game of cricket, the domestic play has been of interest only to the BCCI and very few of the public take involvement in watching and commenting on those games. In fact, I found one of my friends oblivious of the fact that India won the Under 19 ICC Cricket World Cup.
This is a situation like the cricket’s own situation in the type of play. Test cricket and One day Internationals were dominating and after T20’s entrance, many lost the patience to sit and watch Test Cricket. Now the favourites have become the ODIs and T20s. Probably cricket has crossed the stage where domestic play would ever demand attraction by any means. International Cricket is always the cynosure.
But this is no censure to the league. As I have stated in the title, this form of cricket is spellbinding. IPL is a stupendous entertainment any cricket fan can experience. Not the just the viewers, but also the cricketers, especially the younger ones, will have glutted excitement playing with other experienced International players. My already existing joy about IPL was stirred when I saw Ricky Ponting hugging Ishant Sharma for taking a wicket in the first game. We would get to see lot more of “International Hugging” for sure…
IPL is superb, fantastic and entertaining. But for the game of cricket, the International matches are always the best and the entertainment and excitement one would get while watching an action packed India vs. Pakistan game on the field has no equal emotion!!

My Top 5 Mani Movies

Like every single person in india, I too am a fiery fan of Mani Ratnam or “The God of Tamil Cinema”. This splendid director never gets me bored with his film making tactics. Sometimes when I am bored, I start watching a Mani Ratnam movie to glory! And in those many movies he has made, this is my favourite top 5.
1. Iruvar
This film stands the test of time. A controversial and complex film based on the real life history of the MGR and M.Karunanidhi. Although this was a box office flop, I always consider it as Mani’s best work. He articulately expresses the ego and friendship between the two that I feel the ambiance that prevails around them. Whatsoever, only Mani Ratnam can come out with a better movie than this!
2. Mouna Raagam
A lot of people call this as Mani Ratnam’s masterpiece and I absolutely comply with it. Though I like Iruvar better than Mouna Raagam, it is still Mani’s masterpiece. Everything about this movie was perfect. The cinematography, acting, music, screenplay, direction and every other aspect seemed just fine. The subject was a delicate one and needed careful handling and Mani handled it more than just well. The way he depicted love and relationship on screen was brilliant. And yeah, this is probably the only film of Mohan that I liked. I never knew he could act so well.
3. Thalabathi
Yes, I know what you are thinking. How come such an ardent fan of Rajinikanth is placing a Rajini movie here at 3? Well, when it comes to Mani, we always see surprises don’t we? This is beautifully carved film with Rajini doing a fantastic job. I am surprised actually, because the movie originally came into Mani’s mind as a subject from the Friendship of Karna and Arjuna in Mahabaratha. It just has everything, the orphanage problem, friendship, mother-son relationship, and not to forget, a tragic love. It is astounding that such a simple concept was carved in this amazing way. I have watched this film over 20 times now and I won’t get bored with it even if it reaches 100.
4. Nayagan
Should I say anything about this film? The title itself talks all about it. I am no great Kamal Haasan fan but I should say that I was completely awestruck after watching this movie for the first time as a kid. This Godfatherish style film was bravely and meticulously localized that I found no complaints about it. This is another one of those films that I can go on watching without any stopping.
5. Guru
Now that’s a movie that came out too recently and probably the film that elevated Abishek Bachan as an actor. I never really considered Abhishek as an actor, he was not even a mile closer to his father but in this film he rocketed to a pinnacle too high. This is Mani’s first Hindi success and he is striding on more expeditions in bollywood now. This film, loosely based on Ambani was a marvelous film. The screenplay and cinematography was a complete wonder. Aishwarya rai, on the other hand, supported terrifically. All in all, a thunderous movie.
This completes my top 5 Mani list but this is no indication that I don’t love his other movies. Alaipayuthey, Bombay, Kannathil Mutham Ittaal, Dil se, Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Anjali, Agni Natchathiram and Ayutha Ezhuthu are films that I can never forget.

Resurging Back

It has been 7 days since I was loved by a virus that lavishly showered its love on me with what doctors called Infection. But no, I was not prepared to reciprocate the love to this virus and was actually ravenously hungry to murder this little piece of useless, incorrigible and irritating s**t that actually took life out of me while trying to seduce me with fever, giddiness, headache, cough, cold and what not, it even tried ballet dance in my stomach.
I remember the first 4 days, couldn’t really walk out of the bed (except when I had to meet the doc) and all the food I had was “oats khanji”, “arisi khanji” and if my mom and dad deduced a positive result of a long lasting conversation over my food, I would get “idly”.
Yes, it did feel like heaven to stay at home and not attending classes in that exasperatingly irritating college and of course, I had plenteous time to watch some nice riveting movies, clinching on my bed. But staying in the room for too long too made me feel sicker. So what did I do? I went and sat in the hall!
By the end of the 4th day, the virus was half killed and I didn’t have too many problems walking inside the house with some energy! The “khanji food” never stopped but to my surprise, I got “idly” on a higher scale. These 3 days have been a little fine, had time to write stuff, listen to music, and watch more movies and the unfortunate cricket match (damn I still think India should have won). I even got time to play poker at home!!
On the serious front, I am grateful to my mother. She was awake all night, sitting next to me and tapping my shoulders, putting me to sleep and waking me up in the middle to give me medicines. I would have become no better had her care was absent.
Right, so now it is all set. I suspect if any part of the virus is still alive.
“I am really sorry Miss.Virus, but I really did not love you. Not just you, I would never love even your brothers and sisters (bacteria, fungi, other viruses etc). ”
And here I am, resurging back with the power to endure the irritations of my college again.

Righteous Kill Trailer
My 2 Favourite actors in the world Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are making a movie together after 13 years. It was the movie "Heat" that showed them both on the screen at the same time with some sensational action sequences and excellent Cop and Robber chemistry between the two. Previously, they did star in The Godfather Part II together but never shared the screen time.
The trailer of the Righteous Kill looks promising in terms of the acting, action and mystery, crime and thriller parts. I want to watch the first screening of this movie in India somehow. After all, they are the two great legends who will be on screen together. Who would not want to watch this movie???
Long live Al Pacino and Robert De Niro!!!

I Am Al Pacino Fan

Al Pacino is like Rajini for me in hollywood. Now for those who don’t know him, he is the actor considered NO.1 in Hollywood after late Marlon Brando. I don’t need to convince people about that because the majority of the world knows it for a fact and if at all you want to know his acting skills just watch the movies The Godfather series, Scent of a Woman, Scarface, Insomnia, Looking for Richard, Sea of love, Dick Tracy, The Insider, The Recruit, …And Justice For All, Serpico, Dog day afternoon and Heat.
Al Pacino made his debut in Panic in the needle park and then Francis fought with paramount pictures to let him play the role “Micheal Corleone” in The Godfather series. Pacino kept stealing success in all his movies and only for a little while was he down. Coming back in 1983, this man made Scarface (a movie based on Al Capone and I have watched this movie 3 times now!!). Scent of a Woman won him Oscar and other movies that followed it gave him success and only success.
This man is my favourite actor for his awesome acting, incredible dialogue delivery, smart action, mesmerizing romance on screen, the eyes that expresses and all that is good about this fantastic actor. Here are some of his pics and quotes from various movies.
From The Godfather (Pacino as Micheal Corleone)
Michael Corleone: Where does it say that you can't kill a cop?
Tom Hagen: Come on, Mikey...
Michael Corleone: Tom, wait a minute. I'm talking about a cop that's mixed up in drugs. I'm talking about a - a - a dishonest cop - a crooked cop who got mixed up in the rackets and got what was coming to him. That's a terrific story. And we have newspaper people on the payroll, don't we, Tom?
[Tom nods]
Michael Corleone: And they might like a story like that.
Tom Hagen: They might, they just might.
Michael Corleone: [to Sonny] It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business.
--------------------------------------------------
From Godfather Part 2 (Pacino as Micheal Corleone)
Michael Corleone: There are many things my father taught me here in this room. He taught me: keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
----
Michael Corleone: If anything in this life is certain, if history has taught us anything, it is that you can kill anyone.
----
This quote is not by Al Pacino but by his friend and equally great actor considered as another heir to Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro.. a really handsome man. In this movie he plays the role of young Don Vito Corleone which was played by Marlon Brando in The Godfather.
Vito Corleone: [in Italian] Do me this favor. I won't forget it. Ask your friends in the neighborhood about me. They'll tell you I know how to return a favor.
--------------------------------------------------------
From The Godfather Part III (Pacino as Micheal Corleone)
[Michael is kneeling alone in a room at the corpse of Don Tommasino in a coffin]
Michael Corleone: Goodbye my old friend. You could have lived a little longer, I could be closer to my dream. You were so loved, Don Tommasino. Why was I so feared, and you so loved? What was it? I was no less honorable. I wanted to do good. What betrayed me? My mind? My heart? Why do I condemn myself so? I swear, on the lives of my children: Give me a chance to redeem myself, and I will sin, no more.
---
Michael Corleone: Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgment.
---
Michael Corleone: When they come... they come at what you love.
---
Michael Corleone: Your enemies always get strong on what you leave behind.
---
Michael Corleone: He'd better be careful. It's dangerous to be a honest man.
---
Michael Corleone: Do you still fear me Kay?
Kay Corleone: I don't fear you Michael, I just dread you.
---
Michael Corleone: [to Mary] I would burn in hell to keep you safe.
---
And this is my favourite. Micheal Corleone is crowning Vincent Maccini (his brother’s son) to be the Don.
Michael Corleone: Nephew, from this moment on, call yourself Vincent Corleone.
-------------------------------------------------------
From Scent of a Woman (Pacino as Lt. Col. Frank Slade):
Lt. Col. Frank Slade: Out of order, I show you out of order. You don't know what out of order is, Mr. Trask. I'd show you, but I'm too old, I'm too tired, I'm too fuckin' blind. If I were the man I was five years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place! Out of order? Who the hell do you think you're talkin' to? I've been around, you know? There was a time I could see. And I have seen. Boys like these, younger than these, their arms torn out, their legs ripped off. But there isn't nothin' like the sight of an amputated spirit. There is no prosthetic for that. You think you're merely sending this splendid foot soldier back home to Oregon with his tail between his legs, but I say you are... executin' his soul! And why? Because he's not a Bairdman. Bairdmen. You hurt this boy, you're gonna be Baird bums, the lot of ya. And Harry, Jimmy, Trent, wherever you are out there, FUCK YOU TOO!
--------------------------------------
From Scarface (Pacino as Tony Montona)
Tony Montana: What you lookin' at? You all a bunch of fuckin' assholes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!
---
Tony Montana: You wanna fuck with me? Okay. You wanna play rough? Okay. Say hello to my little friend!
---
Tony Montana: In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.
And Let me finish this post with the Al Pacino's Scaraface poster that i have pasted on the wall of my room!!!
Long Live Al Pacino!!

2007 Kollywood Movies
Though a number of movies came to the theaters this year, I couldn’t revel on many movies except a selected few like Sivaji or Chennai 600028. The excessively hyped movies only minified to average pass time entertainers. So here is a list of my top 5 movies that released this year.
1.Sivaji
Yes, yes, I am one among the fandom of Rajinikanth. And that is not the only reason why I place this in the first position. There is nothing that was not there in Sivaji. The Superstar Rajinikanth styles, awesome graphics in songs and action, charging Rajini dialogues, A.R.Rahman’s magical background and songs, Vivek’s hilarious comedy and what not, Sivaji had everything in the right amounts that it deserved to be big block buster. Shankar needs his mention here on directing the movie, setting it up a right pace and signing perfect cast that all put together was a treat to the eyes for all those who watched it. “Thailaivar Superstar Rajinikanth – Vaazhga!!”
2.Mozhi
Amidst movies that were mostly of same genre, came this lovely little masterpiece. Mozhi needs to be extolled for its splendid melding of story line and comedy. From nowhere came Prakash Raj and Prithvi Raj together to rock 3 hours on screen. Emphasizing on the character complexity, feelings of young disabled woman, importance of love for character and not beauty and other various elements that showed on the screen not even a single unnecessary part. One of the best movies of 2007.
3.Chennai 600028
Just the kind of movie that the youth needed. The teens welcomed this movie with all their heart (since they were tired of watching only heroism). Chennai 600028 had a very simple story about street cricket but made a strong mark in the minds of audience. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music, all the newbie’s performances and cricket, humorous dialogues and excellent screenplay were the top most commendable features of this film. None would ever get bored watching this movie over and over again. And I think this movie deserves a sequel.
4.Pachai Kili Muthu Charam
To tell you the truth, this movie is placed here only for Gautam. A fair remake of “derailed” which, I think could have been more appealing had gautam given it some pace. A lot of audience complained that it was boring and it is evident that such comments were made only because the movie lacked. Miland Soman, Sarath Kumar and Jyothika acted fine. Any discussion about this movie would be incomplete without talking about the music. Harris, hats off to you. And hence, pachai Kili Muthu Charam, an average movie which can be rated good compared to other movies of 2007 (excluding the above 3). (Andrea Stole my heart!! )
5.Unnale Unnale
Again, this movie is here in the 5th place only because the others were bad or not upto the mark. However, I did enjoy this movie to certain extent. The background music and the songs were euphonic. Not great peace of acting but it was fun watching the movie. Though a lot of aspects were only average, the movie as a whole was a good one to watch. It didn’t bore the audience and of course, Tanisha and Sada were gorgeous in the film. Debutant vinay did a praiseworthy job. All in all, compared to other 2k7 movies, I feel it deserves to be here.
The top 5 always doesn’t mean others were bad. So here is a list of those that were average and watchable.
Pokkiri
Kannaamuchi yenada
Oram po
Kreedam

polladhavan
And now I officially announce the 2007’s worst tamil movies.

13 Players For Australia
Saddening the Indians, the Indian cricket team failed to save the second test match, losing to the Aussies on Day 5. It is very likely that Indian cricket lovers here get enraged with the players for not holding up but situation seems to be markedly different.
People here are not one bit stormed against our players but upset and angry over the fact that Australians have been playing with 13 men for them on the ground. Yeah!! Australia didn’t use 11 men on the field; they used 13 players to rise up to victory. Skipping the Indian batsmen, if you are counting the men in the white jerseys and still find it to be only 11, then don’t panic. Do count the men in the white shirts and black pants too. Yes, the umpires themselves who have neither faced a single ball with the bat nor took a long run up to bowl to Indians, array…not even did they defend a ball, hit strongly by the Indians, from reaching the boundary but standing in one single position with only the movement of hands, they have helped the Australians sail a long way to victory.
Not just on the 5th day, the whole match has been a mockery of some nonsense with Aussies blessed by the umpires. I am shocked that steve buckner has given wrong judgments.
Dravid is one person who never displays his emotions on the field but today, evidently, he moved out with all anger on his face. Ganguly’s catch was actually grounded by Clarke and was by no means a dismissal, yet he had to go back because Mark Benson raised his finger. More ridiculously, Benson confirmed the catch not by asking the third umpire but the Australian captain Ricky Ponting.
These were not the only two portrayal of partiality by the umpires on the field, but there are lots more that I don’t feel to write about because of sheer disgust towards them.
So to all the Australian cricket players (or A******S) and the umpires of the second test match (or F*****S), let me see how long you will live.

Bye to 2007
I should say 2007 was my worst year so far. Though very few good things happened, I feel 2007 was totally irritating, irksomely boring, tiresome and ill-fated.
Here is a small list of all the bad things that I had to go thru in 2007 which has thankfully ended. This is only a small list. There is actually more to it.
1. Got dissatisfying results in all the exams I wrote.
2. My bike got a scratch on its dome.
3. My computer nearly crashed and I saved it in the final minute. Lost a lot of Al Pacino movies that I had stored in my comp
4. My college irritated me more. Now there is a camera in each class room to control bawdy behaviours.
5. Airtel changed add-on number rates. Now its 20p per minute. (Damn it)
6. I put on a lot of weight!!
7. My college bus route changed and I started reaching home only by 7 PM.
8. Rates of my college canteen food items have drastically increased. Paying so much for bad food now.
9. Wasted Rs.120 and 3 hours of my time in life watching Billa movie.
10. Besent khana khazaana is no more. So no more delicious paneer paratha.
11. Was fined 2 times for overspeeding. Had to pay off 400 bucks each time.
And here are a few good things that occurred.
1. Saw sivaji over 10 times.
2. Got some good gifts for my birthday!!
3. Bought an external hard disk which is too useful for me.
4. Bought new computer table, printer, scanner etc and my room is all arranged near to perfection.
Past is past and it is always good to look ahead than looking back. Let us move forward to improve our country, our life and bring happiness to our parents and make them proud. Long live all the good souls and may evil suffer henceforth. Happy New Year 2008.
